After the oil boom: Luanda faces stark inequality – photo essay Posted: 21 Jan 2019 11:30 PM PST The next 15 megacities #8: Photographer Sean Smith captures the extremes of life in the Angolan capital The route from London to Luanda, the capital of Angola, used to be one of British Airways' most profitable, ferrying people involved in the country's lucrative oil and diamond trades during a remarkable expansion of the city from 2002, after nearly three decades of civil war. In recent years it has competed with Hong Kong and Tokyo for the title of world's most expensive city for expatriates. Cranes dominated the downtown skyline and homes in the surrounding areas were demolished to make way for Chinese-backed housing projects. Wealthy firms reportedly paid millions to fly in pop stars such as Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj for private concerts. Continue reading... |

‘No one can guarantee our safety’: Syrians stuck in squalid exile Posted: 21 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST Despite appalling conditions in Lebanese camps, most refugees say it is unsafe to go home In knee-deep snow and biting cold, 10-year-old Saleh Qarqour had almost finished shovelling a path to the tent that had been his family's home for the past six years. Elders and children huddled around a heater inside. Chimney smoke wafted from the town of Arsal in the valley below. Over the ridge behind them was the Syrian frontier, from which the Qarqour family and nearly everyone else in this Lebanese border town had fled. Their homes ever since had been makeshift tents, their frugal lives sustained by aid and goodwill, which, on this frozen ledge above Lebanon, was fast running out. Continue reading... |

Only empathy can break the cycle of violence in Israel-Palestine | Simon Baron-Cohen Posted: 21 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST I've spent my career studying empathy. It's a vital first step in conflicts where both sides have dehumanised each other Empathy is all about imagining other minds, appreciating that different people have different perspectives, and responding to their thoughts and feelings with an appropriate emotion. After a career studying autism and the nature of empathy, I see empathy as one of our most valuable natural resources. It has particular promise as an approach to conflict resolution, one that has advantages over viewing a problem through a chiefly military, economic or legal lens. We can see this if we look at the Israel-Palestine conflict, where both communities have different views of the same historic period, both claim the same piece of land and both have valid emotional reactions to the conflict that must be acknowledged. I am not an expert in that dispute nor so naive to believe that there is a single, simple solution to it. But I do believe empathy can help. Continue reading... |

How can we take power away from criminal gangs? Legalise drugs | Martin Drewry Posted: 21 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST Prohibition makes our world a more dangerous place, trapping people in poverty I have spoken out on many issues during my career, but there is one that leaders in poorer countries passionately lobby me to campaign on: the prohibition of drugs. The "war on drugs" is harming the most vulnerable and criminalising poverty. It is not a war on drugs – despite decades of prohibition, drug production and consumption is on the increase globally – it is a war on the poor. Prohibition damages people and the planet. At the starter's signal, they charge off, first heaving a 25kg sack of sand into a "doko" wicker basket on their backs, and then starting a gruelling 5km race up the steep mountainside.
