Prime minister says Britain can put divisions aside and turn a corner in 2019

Theresa May has urged the Commons to allow the UK to "turn a corner" by voting for her Brexit deal, using her new year's message to keep up the pressure on MPs ahead of the rescheduled vote on her plans.

The appeal came after the prime minister apparently failed to win any concessions from a round of phone calls with EU leaders over the Christmas period, with Downing Street saying there was still more work to do to win reassurance for MPs over the Irish backstop plans.

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said he hopes to continue denuclearisation talks with Donald Trump in 2019 but used his New Year's address to warn that he could be forced to take a "new path" if the US persists with sanctions against his regime.

Wearing a dark suit and seated on a leather armchair in front of portraits of his predecessors – his father, Kim Jong-il, and grandfather Kim Il-sung – Kim said he was willing to meet the US president "at any time" to produce an outcome that would be "welcomed by the international community".

Mayor says tax will improve monitoring of tourist arrivals and help fund clean-up of litter

Day-trippers to Venice will be charged up to €10 (£9) to enter the famous lagoon city as authorities continue to grapple with the tens of millions of tourists who visit every year.

The Italian parliament approved the entry tax, which will range from €2.50 to €10 depending on the time of year, in its budget for 2019, paving the way for it to be implemented by local authorities. A similar system has been applied for Elba island, part of the Tuscan archipelago, and the Aeolian Islands off Sicily.

Palestinian superbug epidemic could spread, say doctors

Posted: 31 Dec 2018 04:00 AM PST

Medics say antibiotics shortage stops them following protocols to fight drug-resistant bacteria

Doctors in Gaza and the West Bank have said they are battling an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant superbugs, a growing problem in the world's conflict zones, which could also spill over the Palestinian borders.

The rise and spread of such virulent infections adds to the devastation of war, increasing medical costs, blocking hospital beds because patients need care for longer, and often leaving people whose injuries might once have been healed with life-changing disabilities.

Judge denies Kevin Spacey's request to skip hearing in sexual assault case

Posted: 31 Dec 2018 12:07 PM PST

The 59-year-old actor is accused of groping a young man at a Massachusetts bar in 2016

Kevin Spacey must turn up at a forthcoming court hearing in Massachusetts, a judge ruled on Monday, after the actor requested that he be allowed to avoid appearing in person when he faces criminal charges that he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old man at a bar in 2016.

Spacey had submitted a statement to Nantucket district court that his presence at a hearing scheduled for 7 January, on accusations that he groped a young man at a local restaurant and bar, would "amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case".

Politics, science, technology, TV, books … here's what to expect in the year ahead

A year is much more than just 365 days, or one orbit of the Earth around the sun. One year produces so many events and human stories that in 2018 alone, the Guardian published more than 73,000 news articles.

Much of what happens is unpredictable. But with 2019 only hours old, there are a few things that can confidently be foretold.

'Tears are just below the surface': Iolaire tragedy remembered

Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:00 PM PST

The Isle of Lewis is still coming to terms with a maritime disaster that killed 201 men a century ago

Margaret Ferguson's family home on the Isle of Lewis was crowded with portraits. There were more than a hundred, and each was of a man looking out from the canvas. Veterans of the first world war, each man drowned on the same night, on the same boat, a short distance from safety.

In heavy seas and a pitch-black night, an overcrowded steam yacht taking them home on leave, the Iolaire, struck a treacherous reef known as the Beasts of Holm in the early hours of New Year's Day 1919. They were barely a mile from Stornoway harbour and 50 yards from the shore, and of the 280 men on board, only 79 survived.

'Victor Hugo becomes a sex god in my mind' – how to get better at French

Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Worried that she is speaking French like Joey Essex speaks English, Emma Beddington fights back with classes, podcasts and cartoons about mustard-loving aliens resuscitating literary giants

I used to think I was pretty great at French: I could handle a subjunctive and disdained the myriad mangled pronunciations of "millefeuille" on Masterchef. I lived in French-speaking Brussels for 12 years and have a French husband who still tolerates me misgendering the dishwasher after 24 years. My inflated sense of my abilities was bolstered over the years by compliments from surprised French people. Admittedly, the bar is pitifully low for Brits speaking a foreign language: like Samuel Johnson's dog walking on its hind legs, it's not done well but people are surprised it's done at all.

In recent years, however, I have let things slide. My French has become trashy: it's the language of reality and cooking shows (my staple French televisual diet) and easy chat with indulgent friends. I fear I speak French like Joey Essex speaks English, and since we moved back to the UK this year things have got worse. My only French conversation here is with my husband and it runs a well-worn course: who should empty the bin; why we have no money; which of our teenage sons hates us more. When I try to express something complex, I get stuck mid-sentence, unable to express my thoughts clearly. Words that used to be there, waiting to be used, are awol and I have developed a horrible habit of just saying them in English. My husband understands, so who cares?

The uncontacted tribes of Brazil face genocide under Jair Bolsonaro | Fiona Watson

Posted: 31 Dec 2018 04:00 AM PST

Brazil's indigenous peoples, already targeted by loggers, face a powerful foe in the new president. We must protect them

On 1 January, Jair Bolsonaro will be sworn in as Brazil's 38th president. He has expressed open disdain for the indigenous peoples of Brazil, and it is no exaggeration to say that some of the world's most unique and diverse tribes are facing annihilation. Genocide is defined by the UN as "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group". Large-scale mass genocides rightly receive global attention, yet countless others go unreported and unpunished because the victims number only a few hundred, or even a few dozen.

Right now, deep in the Amazon rainforest, a small tribe of survivors is on the run. They are the Kawahiva, an uncontacted tribe of just a few dozen people, the victims of waves of horrific attacks which have pushed them to the brink of extinction. We know almost nothing about them, except that they are fleeing chainsaws in a region with the highest rate of deforestation in the Amazon. Brazil's first ever investigation into the genocide of an uncontacted tribe was launched in 2005, and 29 people suspected of involvement in killing Kawahiva were detained but later released, including a former state governor and a senior policeman. The case stalled for lack of evidence.
