Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:31 PM PST

In 2018 there were 921,000 births and 1.37m deaths, with government efforts failing to encourage families to have more children

Japan suffered its biggest population decline on record this year, according to new figures that underline the country's losing battle to raise its birth rate.

The number of births fell to its lowest since records began more than a century ago, the health and welfare ministry said, soon after parliament approved an immigration bill that will pave the way for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of blue-collar workers to address the worst labour shortage in decades.

Thinktank urges ministers to repeat gender pay-gap legislation for BAME workers

Black and ethnic minority employees are losing out on £3.2bn a year in wages compared to white colleagues doing the same work, according to a study that adds to pressure on the government to introduce mandatory reporting of race pay gaps.

Ministers have been urged to press ahead with proposals to force large firms to report their ethnicity pay gap, after the research showed the extent of the salary disparity for Britain's 1.9 million black, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi workers.

Fears for native biodiversity as climate ideal for propagation

The raucous squawking comes first. Then they are seen, banking and diving before they crash-land on trees.

If Greeks had been told, not long ago, that their skies would become the preserve of ring-necked parakeets, the response would have been one of incredulity.

I used to think the Brexit referendum would revitalise politics. I was wrong | Katy Balls

Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:00 AM PST

The upturn in voter engagement was a cause for celebration. Then the process hit the brick wall of our political class

The Brexit vote managed to divide families and friends all across the country – mine included. Like most Britons, I've had to get used to a debate over the EU working its way into social events: birthdays, Christmas dinners and even a karaoke session. When downhearted friends asked me to name one benefit of Brexit, I used to say that it had made more people engaged in politics.

Away from divergence v alignment, sovereignty v frictionless trade, and the pros and cons of a blue passport, I argued that no matter which way you voted, it could not be denied that swathes of the public who usually felt politics had nothing to say to them were now debating the great issues of the day.

Middle East: Saudi Arabia weakened as Iran plans to consolidate gains

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:00 PM PST

Yemen war and killing of Jamal Khashoggi have put pressure on the kingdom that shows no sign of letting up in 2019

If 2018 was the time of Mohammed bin Salman, the next year is likely to be anything but. It started swimmingly for the young Saudi heir; buy-in at home to an ambitious reform package, support from abroad to a bellicose regional agenda, and an ongoing bromance with another powerful 30-something, Jared Kushner, whose father-in-law, Donald Trump, had anointed Saudi Arabia as the Middle East's pre-eminent power.

The momentum fell apart in seven minutes; the time it took to kill a dissident inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in October. The shocking assassination has led nearly every aspect of Prince Mohammed's agenda to be scrutinised, and its central planks to be challenged by allies and sceptics who had initially warmed to the crown prince.
