Tekin was shot in the leg but kept filming. Continue reading... |

Spain's left must unite to steer country on road to recovery Posted: 02 May 2016 10:00 PM PDT In December voters asked for a coalition, but have been ignored despite the need for cross-party deals to tackle Spain's problems In his restaurant overlooking the Med at Mataró, a few miles north of Barcelona, Ricard Jornet declares himself an insumiso, a rebel who refuses to obey government demands to pay a so-called "tax on sunshine" for an award-winning solar power installation that allows his business to function almost exclusively off sunlight. The anti-ecological tax on self-produced electricity was pushed through by the conservative People's party (PP) government of Mariano Rajoy a few weeks before elections in December. "I think they did it deliberately to protect the electricity companies, knowing that it would hold up the installation of solar power in Spain for another few years," says Jornet, who is just one of many rebelling against the new law. "We are not going to pay." Continue reading... |

A Palestinian view on the antisemitism row | Letters Posted: 02 May 2016 11:21 AM PDT Jonathan Freedland (My plea to the left, 30 April) asks us to imagine if a country far away was created for black people and asks if the left would treat it as it does Israel. As a Palestinian I want to tell him that if, instead of a country for Jews, a country for black people or any other group had been created in our homeland without our consent, we would have objected and resisted as Palestinians with the same vigour. If it continued to defy international law and occupy, colonise and murder and make our lives so miserable that we would leave, we would call for its boycott as we do in the case of the real occupier, Israel. And if that occupation had continued for as long as Israel's has, we would have called supporters of human rights to help us end this occupation, treat Palestinian citizens of that state equally and allow Palestinian refugees to return. As it happens, those are the legitimate demands of the BDS movement called by Palestinian civil society organisations in 2005. Continue reading... |

Father Daniel Berrigan obituary Posted: 02 May 2016 04:46 AM PDT Radical Catholic priest and writer who led protests against the Vietnam war The American Jesuit priest Father Daniel Berrigan, who has died aged 94, formed a radical partnership with his younger brother, Philip, that energised the movement against the Vietnam war in the 1960s and created a tradition of pacifist activism that lasted a generation. Unlike Philip, a former Josephite who gave up the priesthood and married an ex-nun, Daniel remained in holy orders as a Jesuit thinker, writer and teacher, and a well-regarded poet. If Philip was the heart of the anti-war movement, Daniel's intellectual and theological contributions made him the brains. He made consistent denunciations of the "war-making sins" of the state, while a strong strain of philosophical anarchism caused him to rage against what he called "American military imperialism". His detractors, many from within the Catholic church's liberal wing, maintained that his teachings alienated as many as they recruited. Berrigan, in one of several well-known aphorisms, retorted that "a good peace movement starts out small and gets smaller". Continue reading... |

Where the streets have no men: the Nepalese town where women hold sway | Sune Engel Rasmussen Posted: 02 May 2016 11:00 PM PDT Years of migration by men taking up jobs abroad have drained Bhramarpura of working-age men, leaving women to take the reins At first glance, Bhramarpura's dusty, sun-seared streets look like many others in southern Nepal. He has already achieved one of his goals: the timetable for presidential elections this year is no longer feasible. |
